Self Assessment

During this course I have learned a lot which was surprising since class was through zoom. Having class online has its limitations because students and teachers do not get to interact with one another as effectively as they could have if it were in person and there can be technical issues. Although while going through these setbacks I still learned so much during each phase. In every phase we did a distinctive style of writing and had the opportunity to learn and practice skills. In phase one, we had The Written Language and Literacy Narrative assignment, and the purpose of the paper was to connect a personally experience and how affected our language and literacy development. In phase two, we had to write a Rhetorical Analysis and the purpose of the assignment was to find the rhetorical strategies an author used and how it helps develop their work of literature. In phase three, we had to write a Research Paper and the purpose of the paper was to write about a topic that interest us and support our thesis with reliable sources. Every assignment let us explore different course learning outcomes and achieve them.

In phase one, with The Written Language and Literacy Narrative I had achieved a course learning outcome. It helped me “Develop strategies for reading, drafting, collaborating, revising, and editing.” During our in-class workshops that took place on zoom, I got great feedback from my peers that helped me better my writing and even gave me ideas to expand on my work. We revised our papers; I took their advice and even gave them some too. With their advice I got to fix my paper and I got a different perspective for ways I could develop it in a way I did not see before. It was difficult at first for me to give them feedback because I did not want to offend anyone or make them feel like their work was not good, but everyone was so understanding. When I got to my conclusion paragraph, thinking about who my audience might be, really helped brings my thoughts in and relate them to others. Also writing for an audience gave me a purpose and kept me focused to get my point across. As you can see, I achieved a course learning outcome in phase one as well as learning how to write for a specific audience.

In phase two, my rhetorical analysis assignment was about Amy Tan’s, Mother Tongue and in this phase I have learned a lot. I have gained meaningful insights and throughout this paper many terms have impacted my learning and writing practices. This assignment helped me achieve some course learning out comes as well. For example, “Explore and analyze, in writing and reading, a variety of genres and rhetorical situations” was one of them because I needed to do that to find evidence to support my claim that the author was using rhetorical strategies. Furthermore, I was also able to “Recognize and practice key rhetorical terms and strategies when engaged in writing situations” as well when looking for evidence to support my thesis because I was able to identify and ethos, pathos, and logos in the passage. Lastly, “Engage in the collaborative and social aspects of writing processes” was also a course learning outcome for this phase because I had great feedback from my peers during zoom meetings and they informed me on what my paper was lacking for it to best it could be just like in phase one. Clearly, I got to achieve the course learning outcomes and even practiced one again.

I have also achieved many course learning outcomes in phase three as well. For example, “Locate research sources (including academic journal articles, magazine and newspaper articles) in the library’s databases or archives and on the Internet and evaluate them for credibility, accuracy, timeliness, and bias.” I had to find accurate and reliable sources for my paper especially since it was a research paper. Secondly, “Practice systematic application of citation conventions” was also achieved in this phase. I had to provide a works cited page to reference where I got all my evidence from and there, I practiced citing my sources. This paper was good practice since I have never done in text citations before. Lastly, “Compose texts that integrate your stance with appropriate sources using strategies such as summary, critical analysis, interpretation, synthesis, and argumentation” was a major part of my paper during this phase. My research paper had to be at least fifty percent of my own thought and ideas. Hence, I achieved many course learning outcomes in phase three.

As you can see, I have achieved many of the course learning outcomes throughout each phase. Many being different achievements since in each phase I was doing a distinctive style of writing that required different needs to be met. One common course learning outcome that was consistently achieved was “Develop strategies for reading, drafting, collaborating, revising, and editing.” Since for every assignment we had a peer read and give us feedback just as we would do the same for their assignment. We also had to make a first draft of our assignments and edit it ourselves most of the time. Overall, every assignment let us explore different course learning outcomes and achieve them.
